Black-Eyed Susan
Composite Family 
( Rudbeckia hirta)

Height:1'-3' (.3-.6m). Flower:2"-4" (5-10cm) diameter; composite, having 10-20 dark yellow rays around a dark brown disk; single, terminal. Leaves: Linear-lanceolate; entire, rarely toothed; alternate. In Bloom: June-October. Habitat-Range: Waste places, roadsides, dry fields; throughout.

Originally a native of the western United States, it was introduced into our range in samples of clover seed. It closely resembles a rough, hairy species with ovate leaves. Herbalists used the plant to treat skin infections, and recent research has shown that extracts from the plant have antibiotic properties.
