Pinesap
Heath Family
( Monotropa hypopithys
)
This plant looks similar to the Indian Pipe,
but has several dull yellow nodding flowers at the tip instead of only one.
It is not white as is the Indian Pipe. The entire plant is yellow, tan, or
sometimes pale pink in color. It is quite hairy and grows in open or sandy
woods. It is from three to twelve inches high. The stems have crowded scales
which are up to one-half inch long. The upper scales are sometimes toothed.
The dull yellow flowers at the tip usually have five parts, but the ones
nearer the stem sometimes have only three or four petals. The petals are
from three-fourths to one inch long and are slightly hairy.
