2001 Open Water Fishing Regulations

 1. Consult your 2000-2001 Open water Fishing Regulations from The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for all rules and regulations and other fishing regulations.
 2. Motorboats are prohibited except on Matagamon and Webster Lakes. Motorboats of 10hp. or less are allowed on Upper and Lower Togue Ponds.
 3. The use or possession of live fish as bait is prohibited.  General laws apply except otherwise stated.
 4. Open Water fishing  season is from April 1 - September 30; except from August 16 - September 30, rivers, brooks and streams are restricted to the use of artificial lures only and the total bag limit for Salmon, Trout or Togue is one (1) fish.
 5. Watercrafts less then 16 feet and all canoes and kayaks regardless of length, must carry at least (1) Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD), Types I, II or III, for each person aboard.  Watercraft 16 feet or longer must carry the above PLUS (1) type IV device immediately available in craft.  See Maine Boat Laws for requirements for carrying passengers for hire or other commercial purposes.  (This section subject to change - check boat laws for updated information.)
 6. Children 10 years of age or under are now required to WEAR  a Type I, II, or III PFD in all watercraft.
 7. The following are some of the special rules and regulations that apply to some waters in Baxter State Park.

 All other ponds in Baxter State Park except the ones listed above are general law fishing ponds.
 Prohibited acts in fly fishing waters:
      1. It is unlawful to troll in fly fishing only waters
      2. It is unlawful to fish in fly fishing waters with additional weight added to a fly or line for the purpose of            sinking the fly or casting a fly on a spinning rod and reel.
      3. It is unlawful to fish Nesowadnehunk Stream after August 15 through September 30 with anything other            then a fly and to kill and possess more than 1 trout per day (6" Minimum length.)
General fishing laws for Baxter State Park waters.
      1. No live fish as bait (NLFAB)
       2. Brooks, streams and rivers open from April 1 through August 15 (general law) and from August 16 through            September 30, artificial lures only.
   Bag and possession limit is one fish from August 16 through            September 30.

 **FREE FISHING DAYS ARE BACK**

Once again, free fishing days will take place in the State of Maine. The Saturday and Sunday of Father's Day weekend and also the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Presidents Day each year have been established as the annual free  days. Any person, except those whose license has been revoked or suspended, may fish on these days without a license. All other laws and regulations apply.

Fly Fishing Definitions

 FLY:
 A single pointed hook dressed with feathers, hair, thread, tinsel, or any similar material to with no additional weights, hook, spinner, spoon, or similar device is added.

 Fly Fishing:
Casting upon water and retrieving in the usual and ordinary manner, not more than three (3) unbaited flies individually attached to line to which no extra weight has been added. 

 TROLLING:
To fish by trailing a line rigged to catch fish through or over the water behind a watercraft being propelled by mechanical, wind or manual power.
